Transracial Parenting

This class helps parents reflect on how a child's culture and heritage affects the entire adoptive family. We will talk about what it means to be a transracial family, and we will share strategies as to how we can help create a supportive environment for our children. This class is appropriate for all families adopting children of a different ethnic background, whether through international adoption or transracial domestic placement.

The goals of the seminar are to help participants:
  • Understand how a child's sense of identity is shaped by issues of culture and heritage.
  • Think about ways to embrace a child's cultural heritage, and how this can be reflected in each family's practices.
  • Talk about how prejudice affects our families, and share possible strategies to combat racism.
  • Determine ways to help a child respond to negative questions or comments.
  • Realize that transracial parenting (and adoptive parenting) is a life-long process, and that our learning process will continue far beyond the scope of this session.
